Transferring money from Canada to India can take anything from a few seconds to several business days, depending on the provider, how you fund the transfer and how the recipient wants to receive the money.
In 2026, Canadians can send money to India through specialist transfer services such as Wise, Remitly, RemitBee, Instarem, Western Union and Money2India, or directly through Canadian banks including RBC, Scotiabank, CIBC, TD and BMO.
The most important comparison is not simply the advertised transfer fee. The CAD-to-INR exchange rate, foreign-exchange margin, delivery speed, sending limit and final INR amount received can make a much bigger difference.
For example, Scotiabank currently advertises international transfers of up to CAD $15,000 per day and $25,000 per week, while RBC advertises international transfers of up to $50,000 per day. Western Union says verified users may be able to send up to CAD $50,000, while ICICI Bank Canada’s Money2India publishes a CAD $30,000 daily limit from an ICICI Bank Canada account and CAD $6,000 per day when funded by debit card.
This article explains how to transfer money from Canada to India, what information you need, current transfer limits, how UPI transfers work, how long different methods take and when tax or regulatory rules may become relevant.
How Can You Transfer Money from Canada to India?

For most personal transfers, the process is straightforward:
- Choose A Transfer Provider: Compare the final INR payout, fee, exchange rate, delivery speed and transfer limit.
- Choose A Receiving Method: Select Indian bank deposit, UPI transfer or cash pickup where supported.
- Create And Verify Your Account: Complete the provider’s KYC checks.
- Add The Recipient: Enter their name and the details required for the chosen delivery method.
- Select The Transfer Purpose: For example, family maintenance, gift, education or another legitimate purpose.
- Choose A Payment Method: Options may include Canadian bank account, Interac e-Transfer, debit card or credit card.
- Review The INR Payout: Check exactly how many rupees the recipient will receive after all costs.
- Confirm And Track The Transfer: Keep the transaction or reference number until the money arrives.
When moving funds between Canadian accounts before making an international payment, understanding how to transfer money between banks in Canada can also help you choose an appropriate funding method.
If you need to move funds in the opposite direction, the requirements are different because Indian outward-remittance rules apply. See how to send money from India to Canada.
Which Money Transfer Services Can Send CAD to INR in 2026?
There is no single provider that will always produce the highest INR payout. Exchange rates, promotions, payment methods and limits change frequently, so comparing the actual quote at the time of transfer is important.
| Provider | Published Limit or Key Restriction | Typical/Published Speed | Receiving Options |
| Money2India | CAD $30,000/day from ICICI Bank Canada account; CAD $6,000/day by debit card | Often instant to ICICI and IMPS-enabled banks | Bank account, including eligible NRE/NRO transfers |
| Scotiabank | Up to CAD $15,000/day and $25,000/week | Most international transfers advertised within 1 hour | Bank deposit |
| RBC | Up to CAD $50,000/day through International Money Transfer | Most payments within 2 business days | Bank deposit |
| Western Union | Up to CAD $50,000 after applicable identity verification | Minutes for some UPI/cash transfers; bank deposits generally 0–2 business days | Bank deposit, cash pickup, UPI |
| TD Global Transfer | Up to CAD $10,000 through the service | Depends on delivery method | Bank transfer, eligible Visa card, Western Union cash pickup |
| CIBC Global Money Transfer | Limits depend on payment method; CIBC publishes a CAD $75,000 aggregate 24-hour limit and higher per-transaction limits for some funding methods | Varies by destination and transfer | Bank account and other supported delivery methods |
| Instarem | Interac funding up to CAD $3,000/day, $10,000/week and $20,000/month | India transfers may arrive within minutes | Bank deposit |
| RemitBee | Limit depends on identity-verification level | UPI may be instant; bank deposit generally within 24 hours | Bank deposit, UPI |
| Wise | Account and route-specific limits apply | Many transfers arrive within seconds or the same day | Bank deposit |
| Remitly | Sending limits vary by account and verification level | Express and Economy speeds available | Bank deposit, cash pickup and UPI where available |
| BMO | Maximum Global Money Transfer amount depends on the customer’s daily debit limit | BMO states Global Money Transfers may take 2–5 business days | International bank transfer |
Provider limits and delivery times can change, and additional compliance checks can temporarily lower a user’s available limit. Always check the quote screen before relying on a published maximum.
Is It Better to Use a Canadian Bank or a Money Transfer App?
Using your existing Canadian bank can now be much more competitive than it once was.
Scotiabank advertises $0 transfer fees, transfers of up to CAD $15,000 daily, and says most of its international money transfers are completed within one hour.
RBC also advertises $0 transfer fees on its International Money Transfer service, supports India and allows eligible customers to send up to CAD $50,000 per day, with most payments arriving within two business days.
CIBC’s Global Money Transfer supports India in INR and advertises a $0 transfer fee. CIBC also asks customers to provide the purpose of the transfer as part of the transaction process.
TD Global Transfer supports transfers to India and lets eligible customers send up to CAD $10,000, with options including international bank transfer and Western Union cash pickup. TD advertises $0 TD transfer fees for Global Transfer, although exchange-rate costs and third-party charges can still matter.
BMO Global Money Transfer is another alternative. BMO’s standard service can carry a service charge depending on the account plan, and standard foreign-exchange rates apply. Its published maximum depends on the customer’s daily debit limit.
Traditional SWIFT wires are still available through banks including RBC, TD, BMO and others, particularly for large or specialised payments. However, conventional wires can be slower and more expensive. TD, for example, says a traditional wire can take approximately 3–5 business days and may cost $30–$80, depending on the amount and currency, with receiving or intermediary-bank fees potentially applying as well.
For everyday family remittances, an international-transfer product or specialist transfer service may therefore be more convenient than an old-style branch wire.
How Much Money Can You Transfer from Canada to India?
There is no single Canadian legal limit that applies to every personal Canada-to-India transfer.
Instead, your effective maximum may depend on:
- Provider Limits: Each bank or remittance company sets its own transaction, daily or monthly limits.
- Payment Method: Debit cards and Interac e-Transfer can have lower limits than direct bank funding.
- Identity Verification: Higher limits may require enhanced identity checks.
- Source Of Funds: Large transfers may trigger additional questions about where the money came from.
- Transfer Purpose: Property, investment or other high-value transactions can require additional documentation.
- Recipient Bank Controls: The Indian bank may carry out its own compliance checks.
Some useful published examples are:
| Provider | Published Canada-to-India/International Limit |
| ICICI Money2India – ICICI Bank Canada funding | CAD $30,000/day |
| ICICI Money2India – Debit card funding | CAD $6,000/day |
| Scotiabank | CAD $15,000/day; $25,000/week |
| RBC International Money Transfer | Up to CAD $50,000/day |
| Western Union | Up to CAD $50,000 after applicable verification |
| TD Global Transfer | Up to CAD $10,000 |
| Instarem via Interac e-Transfer | CAD $3,000/day; $10,000/week; $20,000/month |
For property purchases, investment funding or other six-figure transfers, it may be necessary to split the payment across permitted days or use a bank product designed for higher-value transactions.
Do not deliberately break up transactions to avoid regulatory reporting or compliance checks.
How Fast Does Money Arrive in India?
Transfer speed depends on both how you fund the transaction and how the recipient receives it.
| Transfer Method | Typical/Published Speed |
| UPI transfer | Often seconds or minutes |
| Cash pickup | Often minutes to a few hours |
| Specialist bank deposit | Seconds to 1 business day on many routes |
| Scotiabank International Money Transfer | Most transfers within 1 hour |
| RBC International Money Transfer | Most within 2 business days |
| Western Union bank deposit | Usually 0–2 business days |
| BMO Global Money Transfer | Around 2–5 business days |
| Traditional SWIFT wire | Commonly 3–5 business days |
Western Union states that cash pickup and qualifying UPI transfers to India can often be available within minutes, while direct bank transfers generally take 0–2 business days.
Wise currently says 77% of its transfers arrive in under 20 seconds and 95% in less than one day across its supported transfers, although an individual Canada-to-India quote can differ depending on the funding method and compliance checks.
RemitBee says bank transfers to major Indian banks can generally arrive within 24 hours and supports instant UPI transfers.
Transfers can still be delayed by incorrect details, weekends, Indian or Canadian bank holidays, anti-fraud reviews or requests for additional documentation.
Can You Send Money Directly to a UPI ID from Canada?
Yes. Several remittance services now allow a Canadian sender to transfer money to a recipient’s UPI-linked bank account in India.
Western Union explicitly supports Canada-to-India UPI transfers. The sender enters the recipient’s UPI ID, funds the transfer in Canadian dollars and the recipient receives INR into the bank account connected to that UPI ID. Western Union says many UPI payments can be processed in real time.
Remitly lists UPI as a receiving option in India, alongside bank deposit and cash pickup, while RemitBee also supports UPI transfers.
This does not mean Canadian Interac e-Transfer directly connects to India’s UPI network. A remittance provider acts as the bridge between the Canadian payment method and the Indian UPI-linked account.
For UPI transfers, you will normally need the recipient’s:
- Full Name
- UPI ID
- Correct UPI-Linked Bank Account
- Any Additional Information Requested By The Provider
Always verify the UPI ID with the recipient before confirming the payment.
What Details Do You Need for an Indian Bank Transfer?
For a normal bank-account deposit, you will commonly need:
- Recipient’s Full Name As Held By Their Bank
- Indian Bank Name
- Account Number
- IFSC Code
- Recipient Address Where Requested
- Purpose Of Transfer
Money2India specifically identifies the recipient’s full name, bank and branch, account number and IFSC code as required information.
India does not generally use IBANs for domestic bank identification. For a traditional international SWIFT wire, the sending bank may additionally request the Indian bank’s SWIFT/BIC code.
If you need to identify Canadian bank-routing information before funding your transfer, understanding a Canadian transit number can help avoid confusing transit, institution and international banking codes.
What KYC Documents May Be Required?
International remittance providers must operate under Canadian anti-money-laundering and identity-verification rules.
FINTRAC requires Canadian money services businesses and foreign money services businesses serving Canadians to comply with identification, record-keeping and reporting requirements. Money services businesses operating in Canada must register with FINTRAC.
Depending on the provider and transfer value, you may be asked for:
- Government-Issued Photo ID
- Canadian Address
- Phone Number And Email
- Selfie Or Live Identity Check
- Source-Of-Funds Evidence For Larger Transfers
- Recipient Information
- Reason Or Purpose For The Transfer
Money2India, for example, uses digital KYC and says some customers may be asked to complete selfie-based verification using their ID.
A larger transfer or unusual transaction can also trigger enhanced due diligence even when the provider has previously verified you.
What Do FINTRAC and RBI Rules Mean for Canada-to-India Transfers?

The Canadian and Indian sides of the payment are governed by different regulatory systems.
In Canada, banks and money services businesses have anti-money-laundering, record-keeping and transaction-reporting obligations under the framework administered by FINTRAC.
For international electronic funds transfers of CAD $10,000 or more, covered reporting entities such as financial institutions and money services businesses generally have reporting obligations to FINTRAC. Related transactions that total at least $10,000 within the applicable 24-hour rule can also be reportable when the regulatory criteria are met.
That does not mean an individual automatically has to file a personal FINTRAC report simply because they send $10,000 to India. The reporting requirement discussed above falls on the covered financial institution or money services business.
On the Indian side, inward remittances operate within Reserve Bank of India and FEMA rules. Banks may need the payment to be categorised using an appropriate purpose code.
Two RBI inward-remittance categories particularly relevant to personal transfers are:
| RBI Purpose Code | Description |
| P1301 | Inward remittance from Indian non-residents towards family maintenance and savings |
| P1302 | Personal gifts and donations |
The exact code should match the real transaction. Do not choose a purpose category simply because it appears more convenient.
India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) is primarily an outward-remittance framework for resident Indians sending funds abroad. It should not be treated as a general limit on money coming into India from Canada.
However, inbound payments connected with property, investments or other regulated transactions may require additional documents establishing the purpose and source of the funds.
What Can You Send Money to India For?
The correct method can differ substantially depending on why you are transferring the funds.
Family Maintenance and Parents
Regular transfers to parents, spouses or children are among the simplest use cases. RBI’s P1301 category specifically covers inward remittances from Indian non-residents for family maintenance and savings.
Recurring transfer features can be useful where the same amount is sent each month.
Gifts
Personal gifts may be transferred to India, but the recipient should consider Indian gift-tax rules before assuming every gift is tax-free.
The relationship between sender and recipient is particularly important.
Education and Tuition
For university tuition or education expenses, verify whether the money should be sent to the student or directly to the educational institution.
Larger tuition payments may also exceed the daily limits of some card-funded transfer services.
Property Purchase
Property payments require more care than an ordinary family remittance.
Money2India specifically supports eligible property-related transfers and identifies permissible real estate purchases by eligible NRI/PIO customers as one potential use case.
Property transactions should be checked against current FEMA eligibility, property type and banking-document requirements before a large payment is made.
NRE or NRO Account Funding
Eligible customers can remit money to their own Indian NRE or NRO account through supported banking channels. Money2India specifically supports transfers to eligible NRE/NRO accounts.
Loan or EMI Payments
Money can also be transferred for eligible Indian loan repayments or EMIs. The payment purpose should accurately reflect the underlying transaction rather than being classified as family maintenance merely for convenience.
Is Money Sent from Canada to India Taxable?
The transfer itself does not automatically make the money taxable. The source, ownership, relationship between the parties and purpose of the payment matter.
Tax Position in Canada
Canada does not generally treat most genuine personal gifts as taxable income to the person receiving them. The CRA lists most gifts and inheritances among amounts that do not have to be reported as income.
Sending your own after-tax cash to a relative in India does not, by itself, create a separate Canadian gift tax.
However, a tax consequence can arise from the transaction used to obtain the money. For example, selling investments to generate the cash may produce a capital gain.
Large foreign holdings are another separate issue.
Canadian residents who own specified foreign property with a total cost amount exceeding CAD $100,000 at any point in the year may have a Form T1135 filing requirement. Merely transferring money to someone else in India is not the same thing as owning specified foreign property.
Tax Position for the Recipient in India
India distinguishes between gifts from relatives and gifts from other people.
The Indian Income Tax Department states that qualifying monetary gifts received from specified relatives are not charged to tax.
For gifts from people who are not qualifying relatives, if the aggregate value of applicable monetary gifts during the year exceeds ₹50,000, the full amount can become taxable unless another statutory exemption applies. The same principles can apply to monetary gifts received from abroad.
Other exemptions can apply, including qualifying gifts received on marriage or by inheritance.
Therefore, “money from Canada is tax-free in India” is too broad. A transfer to a parent or other qualifying relative can have a very different tax result from a large gift to a friend.
For a significant gift, property payment or investment, professional cross-border tax advice may be appropriate.
Why Is the Exchange Rate More Important Than a “$0 Fee”?
The transfer fee is only one component of the cost.
A provider can advertise a $0 transfer fee while offering an exchange rate below the mid-market CAD/INR rate. The difference between those two rates is effectively part of your transfer cost.
Western Union explicitly states that it makes money from currency exchange and advises users to consider both transfer fees and exchange rates.
A Simple CAD $1,000 Example
The following example is illustrative rather than a live provider quote.
Assume the mid-market rate is:
CAD $1 = ₹69.00
| Example | Fee | Effective FX Rate | Approx. INR Received |
| Provider A – Mid-market rate | $8.00 | ₹69.00 | ₹68,448 |
| Provider B – “$0 fee” but 1.5% FX margin | $0 | ₹67.965 | ₹67,965 |
| Provider C – $2.99 fee plus 0.8% FX margin | $2.99 | ₹68.448 | ₹68,243 |
Despite advertising no transfer fee, Provider B produces the lowest INR payout in this hypothetical example.
That is why the simplest comparison is:
How many rupees will the recipient actually receive for my total CAD cost?
Wise, for example, advertises use of the mid-market rate with a separately disclosed fee, while bank and remittance-provider pricing models can incorporate some or all of their revenue into the exchange rate.
How Can You Transfer Money to India Safely?
International remittances are a common target for payment scams, so a few checks are worth making before every large transfer.
- Use Regulated Providers: For a non-bank money transfer company serving Canada, check its regulatory status and use the provider’s genuine website or app.
- Verify Recipient Details Twice: One incorrect digit in an account number, IFSC code or UPI ID can delay or misdirect a payment.
- Compare The Final INR Amount: Do not choose solely because a provider says “$0 fee”.
- Keep The Reference Number: Save the transaction receipt, reference number or MTCN.
- Never Share Verification Codes: A legitimate recipient does not need your banking password, card PIN or one-time security code.
- Be Cautious With Urgent Requests: Confirm unexpected requests for emergency transfers using a separate communication channel.
- Document Large Transfers: Keep evidence showing the source and purpose of funds, especially for property or investment payments.
- Test New Recipient Details: For an unfamiliar beneficiary or new account, consider a smaller initial payment where practical.
FINTRAC advises consumers to research money-transfer businesses before handing over money, while providers may delay transfers when identity, regulatory or fraud checks require further review.
What Happens If a Transfer Is Delayed?
A transfer showing as pending does not necessarily mean the money is lost.
Common causes include:
- Incorrect Recipient Information
- Indian Bank Processing Hours
- Bank Holidays
- Additional KYC Checks
- Source-Of-Funds Verification
- Recipient Bank Compliance Review
- Transfer Limit Being Exceeded
- Card Or Bank Payment Failure
- Unusual Transaction Pattern
- Incorrect Transfer Purpose
First, check the provider’s transaction tracker.
If the estimated delivery time has passed, contact the provider with the transfer reference number. Avoid creating a duplicate transfer unless the original transaction has clearly failed or been cancelled.
For Western Union payments, the MTCN can be used to track the transfer.
If recipient details were entered incorrectly, contact the provider immediately. Whether the payment can be amended or recalled depends on whether the funds have already been paid out.
What Is the Cheapest Way to Send Money from Canada to India?
There is no permanently cheapest provider because CAD/INR rates and transfer charges change.
For smaller personal transfers, specialist services such as Wise, RemitBee, Remitly and Instarem can be competitive because fees and payout amounts can be checked before sending.
For existing bank customers, RBC, Scotiabank and CIBC are also worth checking because they currently advertise $0 transfer fees on their respective international transfer products. The important caveat is that the provider’s foreign-exchange rate still determines the final value.
Before sending, compare the same CAD amount across at least two or three services and record:
| Comparison Point | What to Check |
| CAD Amount Paid | Your total cost |
| Transfer Fee | Flat or percentage fee |
| CAD/INR Rate | Actual rate offered |
| INR Received | Most useful comparison number |
| Delivery Time | Seconds, hours or days |
| Payment Method | Bank, Interac, debit or credit |
| Transfer Limit | Per transaction/day/week/month |
| Receiving Method | Bank, UPI or cash |
| Refund/Tracking | What happens if delayed |
The option producing the highest INR payout is not necessarily best if it takes several days and the payment is urgent. Likewise, the fastest service may cost more.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Documents Do I Need to Send Money to India From Canada?
Most providers require identity verification and may request government-issued ID, a Canadian address and sometimes selfie verification. Larger transfers can also require source-of-funds documents. You will also need the recipient’s bank, UPI or cash-pickup information.
What is the Maximum Amount I Can Transfer From Canada to India?
There is no single provider-wide Canadian limit. Current published examples range from CAD $6,000 per day for Money2India debit-card funding to CAD $50,000 per day through RBC International Money Transfer or up to CAD $50,000 with Western Union after applicable verification. Limits can change based on funding method and compliance checks.
Is Money Sent to Family in India Taxable in Canada or India?
Sending your own after-tax cash does not generally create a separate Canadian gift tax. In India, qualifying gifts from specified relatives are generally exempt, while applicable gifts from non-relatives may become taxable when the annual aggregate exceeds ₹50,000.
How Long Does a Bank Transfer From Canada to India Take?
It depends on the service. Some digital bank transfers arrive within minutes or hours, while a traditional SWIFT wire can take approximately three to five business days. Western Union says its direct bank transfers to India generally take 0–2 business days.
Can I Send Money via UPI Directly From Canada?
Yes, providers including Western Union, Remitly and RemitBee support Canada-to-India transfers using a recipient’s UPI details. The remittance provider converts the CAD into INR and sends the funds to the UPI-linked Indian bank account.
What Happens if the Recipient Details Are Wrong?
Contact the transfer provider immediately. If the payment has not been completed, it may sometimes be possible to amend or cancel it. Recovery becomes more difficult once money has been credited or collected, which is why recipient details should always be verified before confirmation.
Do I Need to Report a Cad $10,000 Transfer to Fintrac Myself?
Not simply because you sent the transfer. Canadian financial institutions and qualifying money services businesses have FINTRAC reporting obligations for certain international electronic funds transfers of $10,000 or more. That is different from a personal requirement to file a report merely because you sent money abroad.
Does Canada’s T1135 Rule Apply Whenever I Send More Than $100,000 to India?
No. Form T1135 concerns specified foreign property owned by certain Canadian taxpayers when its total cost exceeds CAD $100,000 at any time during the year. Simply making a remittance to another person is not automatically a T1135 event.
