If you move within Ontario, changing your address with ServiceOntario is free, but there are legal deadlines you should not miss.
You must update your Ontario driver’s licence and vehicle permit within 6 days of your address changing. Your health card address must be updated within 30 days.

For a driver’s licence or vehicle permit, Ontario says you should have identifying information such as your:

For driver’s licence, vehicle permit or Ontario Photo Card updates, have the relevant current identification available.
Do not confuse these requirements with the more extensive proof-of-residency documents that may be needed when applying for, renewing or replacing certain government identification.

How to Change Your Address With ServiceOntario Online?
The current process is more specific than simply looking for a generic “Change Address” form.
Step 1: Select What You Need to Update
Open the official Ontario address-change service.
The first stage asks you to select the applicable products, including:
- Ontario health card
- Driver’s licence and/or vehicle permit
- Ontario Photo Card
- Accessible parking permit
It also asks whether you are moving to an address in Ontario.

- City
- Province
- Postal code
before continuing.
Step 4: Add Contact Details
The online process requests your name and allows you to provide contact details. Providing an email address allows ServiceOntario to send an electronic receipt.
Step 5: Review and Submit
Review the new address and selected products carefully before submitting the transaction.
Save your electronic receipt or print the confirmation after completing the change.
This gives you a useful record showing when the transaction was submitted, particularly while you are waiting for replacement identification.
When Do You Have to Change Your Address In Person?
Online processing will not work in every case.
Your Health Card Has an Address Printed on It
If an address is printed on your health card, Ontario says the address cannot be changed online. Visit a ServiceOntario centre instead.
You Do Not Have an Ontario Health Card

Changing your address normally updates the address stored in the Ministry of Health’s system rather than producing a replacement health card.
ServiceOntario’s online process states that you should continue using your current health card after the address is updated.
Ontario’s current service refers to legacy cards as red and white health cards. Residents using one of these records can still encounter a red-and-white-card option in the address-change process.
If your situation involves a lost, damaged or expired card rather than a simple move, different replacement rules can apply.
What Will You Receive After the Address Change?
The outcome depends on the product.
Driver’s licence: A new licence showing the updated address is normally mailed within 4 to 6 weeks, unless the licence is close enough to expiry that different renewal rules apply.
Vehicle permit: It is not mailed. Visit a ServiceOntario centre to exchange the old permit.
Health card: Normally, no new card is sent because the current physical health card does not need the updated address printed on it.
Ontario Photo Card: A new card is generally mailed within 4 to 6 weeks, provided it is not due for renewal within 90 days of the address change.
Accessible parking permit: The address can be changed without a replacement permit being issued.

Don’t Forget Your Auto Insurance
Updating ServiceOntario is not the same thing as notifying your automobile insurer.
Ontario’s Financial Services Regulatory Authority says failing to tell an insurer about a move can amount to failing to disclose a material change in risk.
A material change can potentially become relevant to whether an insurer can terminate a policy.
Your new location may also affect the amount you pay.

Canada Post Mail Forwarding Is Separate
A ServiceOntario address change does not redirect your mail.
If you want eligible mail sent from the old address to the new one, Canada Post offers a paid Mail Forwarding service.
Residential permanent-move options are currently available for 4 or 12 months, and the service expires unless extended.

Mail Forwarding is useful, but it is not a substitute for changing your address directly with important senders. Canada Post says a number of items are not forwarded, including:
- Parcels
- Prepaid envelopes
- Mail marked “Do Not Forward”
- Neighbourhood Mail
- Certain mail sent to shared or institutional addresses
That means banks, insurers, government agencies and regular online retailers should still be given your new address directly.
Federal Government Records You Must Update Separately
The Government of Canada specifically warns that changing your address with one department does not automatically change it everywhere because federal government systems are not universally connected.
Canada Revenue Agency
Tell the CRA about your move as soon as possible so tax correspondence and benefit information go to the right address.
The fastest option is generally to update your address through your CRA account, where the CRA says an online change is immediate.
Service Canada
Check whether your address must be updated for programs such as:
- Employment Insurance
- Canada Pension Plan
- Old Age Security
- Canadian Dental Care Plan
- Canada Disability Benefit
The federal Government of Canada change-of-address service directory provides the appropriate route for each program.
IRCC
If you have an active immigration or citizenship application, update your address with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Do You Need to Change the Address on a Canadian Passport?
A move does not require you to apply for a replacement Canadian passport merely because your home address changed.
Current federal passport guidance says that if an old address is written on page 4, you can cross out the old address and write the new address above it.
If there is insufficient space, write the new address on a separate piece of paper and insert it into the passport. Do not use correction fluid.
IRCC expressly states that changing the address in this way does not make the passport invalid.

What About an Outdoors Card or OSAP Account?
These records do not necessarily change when your driver’s licence is updated.
Ontario provides separate address-management routes for both.
For an Outdoors Card, the address can be changed online, by phone or through participating locations.
For OSAP, update the information through the applicable OSAP account.
Check these records separately instead of assuming the integrated driver’s licence and health-card transaction covers them.
Provincial Offences Court Addresses Must Be Changed Separately
This is an important exception for anyone with an outstanding ticket or Provincial Offences Act matter.
Ontario expressly states that changing your address through ServiceOntario does not update your address with the Provincial Offences Court.
If you have an outstanding provincial offence matter, contact the relevant court directly.
Failing to receive a notice because the court has an old address does not necessarily prevent enforcement action.
Ontario warns that unpaid fines can still lead to measures such as licence suspension or plate denial.
Changing a Business Address in Ontario
Business owners should treat their personal ServiceOntario update and their business-address update as separate tasks.

Moving to Ontario From Another Province
If you are moving into Ontario, simply changing an address is not always the right process.
Ontario currently permits a new resident to use a valid driver’s licence from another province, territory or eligible foreign jurisdiction for 60 days after moving to Ontario.
After that, the driver generally needs to switch to an Ontario licence.
Licence-exchange requirements depend on where the existing licence was issued, the class of licence and the driver’s previous experience.
Anyone establishing Ontario residency should also check the requirements for OHIP registration, vehicle registration and Ontario insurance rather than relying only on the address-change tool.
Moving Out of Ontario
If you are leaving Ontario permanently, check the rules in the province, territory or country you are moving to because you may need to exchange your Ontario licence.
Ontario also allows eligible people leaving the province to request a refund for unused portions of a driver’s licence fee. The refund is generally calculated in complete six-month periods remaining on the licence and is subject to the government’s eligibility rules.
Health coverage needs attention too. For a permanent move to another Canadian province or territory, Ontario says OHIP generally continues until the last day of the second full month after leaving Ontario, giving the person time to arrange coverage in the new province or territory.

Ontario’s Central Forms Repository continues to list form/service number 023-05011, describing it as a way of changing address information associated with driver’s licence, vehicle registration, health card and Outdoors Card records.
For most residents, however, the current integrated online ServiceOntario address-change service is the clearer starting point.
What If You Missed the 6-Day Deadline?
If more than six days have already passed since your address changed, update your driver’s licence and vehicle permit as soon as possible.
Ontario describes the six-day period as a legal requirement.
The government’s main address-change page does not provide a single universal fine amount for every late-update situation, so avoid relying on unofficial websites that quote a penalty without explaining its legal basis or circumstances.
Completing the change promptly is more useful than delaying further because you are unsure about a possible penalty.
Final Address-Change Cleanup
Once the government and financial records are handled, check the less obvious places where the old address may remain.
Review saved addresses in:
- Amazon and other online shops
- Grocery-delivery services
- Food-delivery apps
- PayPal and other payment accounts
- Credit-card billing profiles
